Environmental Issues

We live in an important time in Earth's history, a time when humanity must choose its future. As the world becomes increasingly interdependent and fragile to move forward we must recognize that in the midst of a magnificent diversity of cultures and life forms we are one human family and one Earth community with a common destiny. We must join together to bring forth a sustainable global society founded on respect for nature.

Up until now the dominant patterns of production and consumption have caused environmental devastation, the depletion of resources, and a massive extinction of species. The climate is changing. The earth is warming up, and there is now overwhelming scientific consensus that it is happening, and human-induced. With global warming on the increase and species and their habitats on the decrease, chances for ecosystems to adapt naturally are diminishing. Many are agreed that climate change may be one of the greatest threats facing the planet.

It is up to us to decide to make it a priority to care for the planet and one another or risk the destruction of ourselves and the diversity of life. Changes are needed in our values, institutions, and ways of living. We have the knowledge and technology to provide for all and to reduce our impacts on the environment. It is time that we start acting and driving change for a better tomorrow.
